EU/US/Canadian/Japanese/Swiss/Turkish/Slovak passport-holders do not require invitations for single/double-entry business visas, or for private visas. They do need to supply the contact details of the company/person they are visiting. For tourist visas and multi-entry business visas these nationalities still have to supply the correct paper-work (see below). Other nationalities always require an invitation.
For single/double-entry visas you need to supply a letter on headed paper from the Ukrainain company signed and stamped, stating dates and purpose of your trip specifying your passport details, date of birth etc. For multiple -entry visas, both the Ukrainian and British companies must provide detailed letters explaining the nature and purpose of their business partnership. You also need to supply a copy of the Ukrainian company's certificate of incorporation. .
The letter type invitation has been almost entirely phased out. Very few organisations are still accredited to issue them and each one has to be referred to the Consulate on a case-by-case basis.
All other types of invitation must be issued through one of the the Ministries. Be aware that: Your Russian partners must invest time and effort with the Ministry: The Ministry charges a fee and It takes time - 2-5 days for single/double and 14-28 days for multi. Ministry invitations can be certificate or telex. Certificate: for single or double a faxed copy is acceptable; for multi the original is required. Telex: as it's an internal electronic document no copy is required (but it can sometimes be helpful to have the telex number)
Confirmation required from the Ukraine of paid for accommodation/ground arrangements. Scott's Tours can arrange this (see Hotels below).
Your Ukrainian friends/contacts can invite you to stay with them. They will need to apply to their local OVIR (Office of visas and registration) office. The OVIR will issue an official invitation. However, this can take several weeks to appear.
Maximum stay 3 days. Issued against proof of travel via Ukraine to third country (usually another member of the CIS) and possession of visa for that country.
